About Bled

Bled, the Slovenia’s number one tourist attraction is located in the beautiful and mountainous northwest of Slovenia. With less than 1-hour drive from Ljubljana and 1.5 hour from Koper it’s easily accessible and perfect for a half day trip.

The town of Bled, with its alpine lake, glacial origin, the famous island-living goddess, and the oldest castle in Slovenia, is one of the most prestigious Slovenian resorts. Bled has been the most popular tourist resort in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy since the 19th century Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli discovered its ideal natural conditions and founded a health centre there. Also the Yugoslavian president Tito had one of the residences here, The Vila Bled hotel. Before him, this was a vacation spot for the royal family of the first Yugoslav king, Aleksandar Karađorđević. The residence is located on the shore of Lake Bled and is surrounded by a glorious park, full of beautiful flowers and mighty trees.

The Bled Island, on Lake Bled, features a picturesque church and stunning views of the beautiful emerald coloured lake. The island has been visited by pilgrims since ancient history, and you can reach it by a wooden traditional boat called pletna.

Above the lake there is a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff face, from where you can admire the unbelievable beauty of the lake and the high peaks of the Julian Alps.

Surroundings

Bled has in its vicinity many interesting places which we strongly recommend you to visit. We are offering you a list of trips that can be combined with the visit of Bled.

Only 20 km from Bled is located Slovenia's largest natural lake of glacial origin - Bohinj Lake. You can ascend the cable car to Vogel (1537m), located in the south-eastern part of the Julian Alps, and at the top enjoy the beautiful view of Triglav National Park and the Bohinj Lake.

Just 40 km from Bled is situated Kranjska Gora, a mountain village very well known amongst the fans of Alpine skiing. Every year, competitions for the Alpine Ski World Cup are organized here. Kranjska Gora is a popular sport and tourist centre, famous for not only its winter sports but also for its natural beauty and exceptionally scenic walking, biking, hiking and climbing routes. You will also bear witness to a 300-year-old Lizenjakove house, which was a restaurant in the past.

40 km from Bled is also Škofja Loka, one of the oldest Slovenian towns. The town is located on the confluence of the Selška Sora and Poljanska Sora rivers, between the highlands of Škofja Loka and the Sava Valley. The name Škofja Loka itself tells us that it once belonged to the Bishops of Freising between the 10th and 19th centuries. The city developed most prominently during the Middle Ages since it is located on the important path between Klagenfurt and Trieste. Craftsmen and artisans gathered here to sell their products, such as iron, copper, dairy, fabric, meat, hats, combs, and others. In 1987, the city was declared a cultural monument. The sightseeing of the city sights include Mestni Trg and Zgornji Trg with their colourful building facades, gothic and baroque portals and arcade backyards (Stari Rotovž, Stari Farovž, the Church of Saint Jacob, the Old School, Homan’s House, Žigon’s House, Martin’s House, Mary’s Sign, the former city port, The Stone Bridge, and others), and Spodnji Trg (Špital with the Špital Church, Kašča, and others). You will arrive there through the passage called Pekel (“Hell”). The Old Town features also the Loka Castle, built well before 1202, which reigns over the city and presents Škofja Loka with best-preserved medieval town in Slovenia.
